Grants Awarded To Northwest Arkansas Cities

The Rogers Historical Museum and Fayetteville were among the recipients of Arkansas Historic Preservation Program grants announced this week.

The Rogers museum received a $10,000 Historic Preservation Restoration Grant for window restoration at the 1917 former Rogers Post Office, now used by the museum as an annex.

Rogers received a $12,719 Certified Local Government Grant for administration, training and design guideline updates. Fayetteville received $8,515 for training and website modifications.

Main Street Rogers and Main Street Siloam Springs each received $10,000 Downtown Revitalization Grants for projects to benefit downtown areas.

The grant program distributes money raised through the Real Estate Transfer Tax to rehabilitate buildings listed on the Arkansas or National Registers of Historic Places and owned by local governments or not-for-profit organizations.

The Certified Local Government program is open to Arkansas cities and counties with a historic district and commission, as well as to cities and counties seeking to join the program.

The Downtown Revitalization Grants program also is paid for by the Real Estate Transfer Tax. The money can be used for building rehabilitation, parks, streetscape improvements and other design-related projects that will have major long-term impacts in the local Main Street area.

The Arkansas Historic Preservation Program is the agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage responsible for identifying, evaluating, registering and preserving the state's cultural resources.
