Thursday, July 17, 2014

North Little Rock and Fayetteville broke low-temperature marks Wednesday morning as a cold front dropped the mercury well below normal readings for July, National Weather Service meteorologists said.

North Little Rock's 62 degrees, recorded at the weather service's station, broke the record of 65 degrees for the day set July 16, 1990, said meteorologist Chris Buonanno. Little Rock recorded a low of 63 degrees Wednesday morning.

In Northwest Arkansas, Fayetteville had a low of 50 degrees, which broke the Washington County town's previous low for July 16 -- 55 set in 1967. Highfill also recorded a low of 50 degrees, Rogers reported 52 as a low and Harrison reported 52 for a low on Wednesday morning.

The average lows for Arkansas in July are usually in the mid- to lower 70s, meteorologists said.

Storms are forecast for much of the state tonight and Friday. The southern half of the state could see up 6 inches of rain during the two days, forecasters said.

The weather is expected to remain cool throughout the weekend and then return to the lower 90s in central Arkansas by Monday.
