FAYETTEVILLE -- Police are investigating another incidence of mail theft.

Sgt. Craig Stout said the Washington County Sheriff's Office notified Fayetteville Police about mail dumped in its jurisdiction. The mail appeared to be stolen from inside Fayetteville. Police wouldn't identify where the mail was discovered or how much was found.

Addresses on the mail were from 16 residences, most in the Hearthstone and Copper Creek subdivisions on the north side of the city, Stout said. Eventually, the mail will be returned to the owners, he said.

"It's too early in the investigation to connect the theft to the incident in Springdale," Stout said. Eight people were recently arrested in connection with a mail theft and forgery ring in Springdale. Six people were arrested earlier this month in Fayetteville, also in connection with mail theft and forgery.

Residents are advised it's often safer to drop outgoing mail in a U.S. Postal Service mailbox or put it in a home mailbox as close as possible to the time of pickup.
