Local Students Receive National Merit Scholarships

Recent high school graduates in Northwest Arkansas are among the latest recipients of National Merit scholarships, according to an announcement Monday from the National Merit Scholarship Corp.

The students and the universities that sponsored their scholarships are:

• Bentonville High School -- Courtney D. Griggs, University of Texas at Dallas; and Alicia Hoke, Transylvania University.

• Fayetteville High School -- Aaron E. Koch, University of Arkansas.

• Haas Hall Academy -- Katharine Montana Magoulick, Michigan State University.

• Har-Ber High School -- Ryan J. Thompson, University of Arkansas.

They are among some 1,600 students names Monday. College or university sponsored scholarships for about 2,500 students was announced in late May.

This year, 181 colleges and universities are sponsoring about 4,100 Merit Scholarships. Approximately $33 million was awarded to about 7,600 National Merit Scholars this year.
