BIG ROCK

Mini golf event hits a score while fundraising for center

As American as apple pie? That sure is a sweet simile, but some food historians trace the origins of apple pie back to the European Middle Ages or earlier, to Asia, where apples are believed to originate. So how about "as American as mini golf."

Marci Hall could certainly get behind it. Just before 11 a.m. July 5, Hall cut the ribbon at her Big Rock Mini Golf & Fun Park, and gave all proceeds until 2 p.m. to the Centers for Youth and Families. Chris Shenep, spokesman for that charity, said Hall hadn't previously sat on its board or hosted a major fundraiser, which made the gesture particularly sweet.

Hall's husband, Robert, one-half of Hugg and Hall Equipment (Marci Hall was previously Marci Hugg), said his wife's whole business model is to serve children and families.

"She's the business," he said. "She wanted a place where organizations can come, and parents, and they're going to get a real good value, and she's the reason. She loves kids."

Along with mini golf, the for-profit park includes bumper boats, go-carts, batting cages and indoor arcade games and a birthday space. It's significantly expanded and updated from its previous incarnation, Gator Golf.
