Deputy under scrutiny in bar gunfire resigns

PINE BLUFF -- A Jefferson County sheriff's office investigator involved in a July 5 shooting at a Pine Bluff restaurant has resigned.

Randy Jackson, a member of a special investigations unit and an eight-year veteran of the office, resigned Friday after the sheriff's office began an internal investigation concerning the shooting, officials said Saturday.

On July 5 at 3:26 a.m., officers were dispatched to Swann's Bar and Lounge at 3003 W. Pullen St. in Pine Bluff after a 911 call about a deputy-involved shooting. Dedric Jones, 36, had suffered a single gunshot wound in his chest.

Jones was transported to Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff, underwent emergency surgery and was in stable condition as of Wednesday.

The details of the shooting were unclear, and on July 5, sheriff's office spokesman Maj. Lafayette Woods Jr. said he was unsure whether Jackson had been on duty at the time.

Jackson was placed on administrative leave, and the sheriff's office opened an internal investigation into the shooting. A separate investigation by the Jefferson County prosecutor will determine whether criminal charges are warranted.
