TRAILBLAZERS

Democrats honor women who have made a difference

The sold-out inaugural Jimmie Lou Fisher-Lottie Shackelford Dinner on June 28 at Cajun's Wharf began with a reception, where friends, fans and family had a chance to visit with the two women for which the event -- intended to be an annual affair -- is named.

The purpose of the yearly dinner is to honor women who work in support of issues important to their peers in Arkansas. Arkansas Democratic Party chairman Vincent Insalaco noted that Shackelford was the first female mayor of Little Rock and is the longest-serving vice chairman of the Democratic National Committee, while Fisher is the longest-serving state treasurer.

"Talk about trailblazing women," he said.

Nearly 300 attended the dinner.
