2 firefighter units share U.S. agency's $340,000

WASHINGTON -- Two Arkansas fire departments will split $340,000 in federal grants for equipment, U.S. Sens. John Boozman, R-Ark., and Mark Pryor, D-Ark., announced this week.

The grants from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program were awarded Thursday to the Etowah Fire Department and the Arkansas Fire Training Academy in Camden.

The Etowah department will receive $134,700 for a brush truck. The training academy will receive $207,400 for firefighting gear and equipment.

BACK HOME

Pryor met Friday with Monroe County Judge Larry Taylor and Jim Carroll of the Office of Emergency Management drainage district in Brinkley to discuss damage to crops and homes flooded by storms earlier this month. He also toured damaged farms and homes and visited with residents.

U.S. Rep. Tom Cotton made 31 campaign stops in 19 different counties during the Fourth of July week, his U.S. Senate campaign said. Cotton is challenging Pryor. Events included the Rodeo of the Ozarks parade, stopping in Neal's Cafe in Springdale, meeting with seniors in Harrison, touring the Baxter County jail and attending a fish fry in Hot Springs Village.

VETERANS HELP

Cotton's staff is scheduled to hold events to help veterans with problems, including at 12:30 p.m. on July 22 at the Drew County Courthouse in Monticello and 3 p.m. the same day at the Ashley County Courthouse in Hamburg.

NICOTINE POISONING

On Thursday, Pryor signed on as a co-sponsor of the Child Nicotine Poisoning Prevention Act of 2014. The number of children sent to emergency rooms as a result of liquid nicotine poisoning has spiked, his office said. The legislation requires child-proof packaging for the product.

ENDORSEMENTS AND AWARDS

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce endorsed 4th Congressional District Republican candidate Bruce Westerman and 2nd District Republican candidate French Hill.

On Thursday, Cotton received an award from the Association of Mature American Citizens for his work in Congress ion behalf of senior citizens, his staff reported.

On Tuesday, U.S. Rep. Rick Crawford received an award for his work on the farm credit system from the AgriBank District Farm Credit Council. The Council is made up of representatives of the 17 Farm Credit Associations in the AgriBank District. Tony Wilkie, from Forrest City, presented the award, Crawford's staff reported.

ON THE HILL

Several staff members moved to new jobs in U.S. Rep. Tim Griffin's office. Peter Comstock is now Griffin's chief of staff and Jason McGehee is now deputy chief of staff and district director, Griffin's spokesman said.

Holli Heiles is now legislative director and tax counsel; Dylan Frost, legislative assistant and correspondence director; Toska Gamble, executive assistant and Tim Wang, senior trade adviser. Anushree Jumde and Sarah Beth Lowe were each brought on as district representatives.

On Tuesday, Griffin spoke about the legislative process with nine students from his 2nd Congressional District who are participating in the Washington Center for Internships & Academic Seminars program, his staff reported.

Hannah Ray of Conway finished her internship in Cotton's office Friday. She will be a sophomore at the University of Central Arkansas.

On Wednesday, Pryor and U.S. Rep. Steve Womack met with Fort Smith School District Superintendent Benny Gooden to discuss the E-Rate Program, which provides U.S. schools and libraries with affordable Internet access. He also met with Roy Armes of Cooper Tire in Texarkana, his staff reported. Springdale School Superintendent Jim Rollins also visited Womack on Friday, his staff said.

A group of Arkansas 4-H students in Washington for the Leadership Washington Focus, a 4-H leadership program, met with several members of the delegation.

Cotton and Griffin met with members of the Arkansas Farm Credit Board to discuss loan programs for new farmers, the Environmental Protection Agency, navigable waters, and recent floods in Arkansas, their staffs reported.
