Attorney general candidates split on 'federal overreach'

HOT SPRINGS — The Democratic and Republican candidates for Arkansas attorney general are divided over whether the office should be used to fight the federal government.

Republican nominee Leslie Rutledge continued her vow to use the office to fight what she calls "overreach" by the federal government as she appeared in a debate Friday held by the Arkansas Press Association. Democratic nominee Nate Steel said he's also frustrated with the federal government, but said he didn't think the solution was an overreaching attorney general.

Libertarian nominee Aaron Cash said during the debate he supports legalizing marijuana, a position both Steel and Rutledge said they oppose.

The three are running to succeed Democratic Attorney General Dustin McDaniel, who is serving his last year in office.
