Crash on I-40 kills one, snarls traffic

One person was killed in a crash on Interstate 40 in North Little Rock, the second of two in a half-mile stretch that stalled traffic for several hours late Wednesday afternoon.

State troopers had responded about 4:38 p.m. to the 161-mile marker of I-40 westbound near Galloway Road, according to state police spokesman Bill Sadler. About 18 minutes later, troopers were called to a crash on I-40 westbound about a half-mile from the first collision.

In the second collision, three tractor trailers were involved, and a car had been crushed between the front of one rig and the rear of another, according to photos and videos taken at the scene. The lone occupant of the car, who had not been identified late Wednesday, was killed.

Westbound lanes of the interstate were closed until 7:48 p.m., when one lane reopened. Sadler said that all lanes had been reopened by about 8:20 p.m.

Other injuries in the crashes were unknown.

Sadler said that toxicology tests were being performed on those involved in the fatal crash. An investigation is ongoing.
