Storms in N.Y., Maryland kill 5

SMITHFIELD, N.Y. -- Officials in central New York said Tuesday that four people are dead and four homes have been destroyed in building collapses amid severe thunderstorms.

      

A spokesman for the Madison County Emergency Management Office said the deaths were reported Tuesday evening in Smithfield, located between Syracuse and Utica. No details were immediately available.

Madison County Sheriff Allen Riley did not identify the victims. He told The Post-Standard he was still notifying their families.

The Emergency Management Office spokesman said there is widespread damage in the towns of Sullivan and Lenox.

In Maryland on Tuesday, a tree fell at a summer camp during a strong thunderstorm, killing one child and injuring six others.

Cpl. Jon Light with the Carroll County sheriff's office said the storm struck about 7 p.m. Tuesday. He said at the time, about 114 children were attending an event at a hillside pavilion in Manchester.

The children were being taken to a nearby shelter on the hill as the storm approached when the tree fell, injuring seven.

Light said one of the children later died from his injuries.
