Fayetteville Seeks Input On Drainage Repairs In Washington-Willow Neighborhood

FAYETTEVILLE -- Residents will have an opportunity Tuesday to review planned drainage improvements in the historic Washington-Willow neighborhood north of Lafayette Street and east of College Avenue.

The area is prone to flooding, because of an undersized culvert that backs up in heavy rain.

According to a city news release, Fayetteville engineers want to divide drainage improvements into two projects.

The first project would add a box culvert on the west side of Walnut Avenue just north of Gunter Street. The culvert would run south to Maple Street and east to Olive Avenue.

The second project involves constructing a box culvert on the west side of Walnut Avenue just north of Johnson Street. The culvert would run south to Johnson Street and east to Olive Avenue. From Olive Avenue, a large pipe would extend north to Rebecca Street.

The city will have to acquire land from several property owners to make repairs. The project will require tearing up streets and sidewalks, and longstanding trees may have to be uprooted.

Tuesday's "drop-in" meeting is scheduled from 4 to 6:30 p.m. in Room 111 of the City Administration Building, 113 W. Mountain St. Residents will be able to ask questions about the project and look at maps of proposed improvements.
