Arkansans Across the Minors

News and notes

• Pitcher Blake Parker (Arkansas Razorbacks/Fayetteville) has been selected for the Class AAA All-Star Game, which will be played July 16 in Durham, N.C. Parker has an 0-0 record and a 1.44 ERA in 25 games for the Iowa Cubs (AAA Cubs) with 18 saves in 19 opportunities this season. While he's had success in Iowa this season, his two stints in Chicago have not gone as well. He's 0-0 with a 10.12 ERA in 3 appearances with Chicago, in which he's allowed 3 earned runs on 6 hits. Parker, who is Iowa's all-time saves leader with 59, was drafted by the Cubs in the 16th round in 2006 and was an All-Star in the Class A Midwest League in 2008.

• Pitcher Chris Oliver (Arkansas Razorbacks) was promoted to short-season Class A Williamsport from the Philadelphia Phillies' Gulf Coast League rookie team on June 29. "Due to the early start of the New York-Penn League season in relation to the draft, the Phillies opted to send nearly all their drafted players to Clearwater for a mini-camp and the start of the Gulf Coast League season," Williamsport general manager Doug Estes said. "We have since received about 15 players from this group and Chris happened to be one of them."

• Outfielder Brett Eibner (Arkansas Razorbacks) was placed on the disabled list June 27, retroactive to June 25, by the Omaha Storm Chasers (AAA Royals) with a right abdomen strain. Eibner is batting .243 with 27 RBI for the Storm Chasers this season. Attempts to contact the team regarding the severity of the injury and a timetable for Eibner's return were unsuccessful.

• Pitcher Duke Welker (Arkansas Razorbacks) underwent Tommy John surgery on June 5, ending his season with the Indianapolis Indians (AAA Pirates). According to the Pirates' website, Welker got a second opinion on his injured right elbow from Dr. James Andrews, who recommended and performed the surgery in Gulf Breeeze, Fla. Welker, 28, was 1-1 with a 4.91 ERA, 15 strikeouts and 11 walks in 9 appearances for Indianapolis this season. He last pitched on May 3 at Pawtucket, allowing 2 earned runs on 2 hits with 2 walks and 1 strikeout in 2/3 of an inning.
