HORACE MANN TRANSITIONAL CLASS OF 1972

Annual event cooks up cash for college scholarship fund

The way to a man's heart is through his stomach, the saying goes. The Horace Mann Transitional Class of 1972 believes in using the same passageway to young people's education.

The class presented its 11th annual Cooking for College on June 22 at the Horace Mann Middle School Cafeteria as a way to raise money for scholarships for high school seniors next year.

The event began with a program during which Edwin L. Hawkins I Challenge You Scholarships were awarded to three 2014 Central High School graduates: Miya Goodwin, who earned a 3.56 grade point average and plans to study at Howard University in Washington; Khloe Richardson, who earned a 3.72 GPA and will study at Columbia College of Arts in Chicago; and Attrice Meeks, who earned a 4.0 and will attend the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.

Faye Russ, a 1961 Horace Mann High graduate, gave a history of the school, which was built to relieve overcrowding at the all-black Dunbar High School, now a middle school. Brief remarks were given by Faye Thomas, president of the national Dunbar-Horace Mann Alumni Association.

After the program, nearly 30 cooks served a smorgasbord of gumbo, barbecued ribs, beans, greens, chicken and dumplings, cornbread, assorted desserts and more.

The Horace Mann Transitional Class of 1972 consists of seniors-to-be who didn't get to graduate from the school because it became a junior high school after their junior year.

Close to $30,000 in scholarships has been given by the class over 11 years.
