Rogers Aldermen To Consider Oversight Contract For Road Improvement

ROGERS -- Aldermen are scheduled Tuesday to consider hiring a company to oversee the construction of the first section of improvement to Monte Ne Road.

Monte Road improvements are part of a major change of traffic flow on the east side of Rogers. Monte Ne is scheduled to be widened from two lanes to four. The road will connect with a roundabout at the intersection of Oak, First and Arkansas streets. City officials said First Street is likely to be part of the Arkansas 265 corridor connecting Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard in Fayetteville with Hudson Road in Rogers.

Rogers City Council

Rogers City Council will meet 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Council Chamber, 301 W. Chestnut St. Visitors should enter through the door on the northeast side of the building.

Agenda items include:

• Moving $20,629 from the Animal Shelter reserve for improvement to the cat room at the shelter.

• Accepting a $387,735 Community Development Block Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

• An amendment to the city code setting penalties for motorists who disregard temporary hazard signs.

• Rezoning 1.13 acres at the northeast corner of Pleasant Grove and Dixieland roads from agricultural to highway commercial.

• Rezoning 2110, 2114, 2118, 2120 and 2202 S. Eighth St. from a mix of agricultural, highway commercial and open display commercial to all open display commercial.

Garver LLC will oversee construction from New Hope Road to Gum Street if aldermen approve the $195,000 contract.

"The second section will stretch from Gum Street to the roundabout," said Lance Jobe, city engineer. "We are still waiting on the Arkansas Department of Highway and Transportation to approve the design of the roundabout before moving on to the second section."

Jobe said he expects to hear from the Highway Department within the next few weeks.

"Once we have approval for the design of the roundabout we can tie up the loose end on the second section of Monte Ne Road. Construction on that section should begin next year," he said.

First Street is scheduled to be widened to four lanes and Oak Street, which dead-ends at Second Street, will be built to connect with the roundabout.

"These two improved roads and the extension of Oak Street will greatly improve traffic flow in the area, making it easier for motorists coming from the east to get to downtown. This fits well with our plan to improve the downtown area and improve its economic viability," said Mayor Greg Hines.
