$1.3 million to aid veterans’ children

A $1.3 million federal grant will help a University of Arkansas at Fayetteville researcher develop and test a mentoring system for students in military families, the university has announced.

Psychology professor Tim Cavell will collaborate with staff members from North Thurston Public Schools in Lacey, Wash. The grant money, to be awarded over four years, comes from the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences.

Cavell’s team will seek to address disruptions in learning that can be caused by deployment-related stress. Schools on military bases have long offered school-based mentoring, but many more reservists have been deployed in recent years.

In his grant application, Cavell wrote that school district personnel must develop a network connecting military parents, school staffs, community organizations and mentoring groups.
