Hernandez could use a calendar

Former Florida and New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez, jailed while awaiting trial in the killings of three men, is Mr. July in the Gators' 2014 sports calendar and is featured in a Patriots calendar produced by the same company.

The University of Florida said Tuesday officials approved the publication months before Hernandez was charged with murder, and the Patriots said they would not comment on matters involving Hernandez.

The calendars are available for sale through Target.com and feature Hernandez in his white No. 81 Gators jersey and blue pants with an orange stripe carrying the football under his right arm. It includes his height, weight and hometown of Bristol, Conn.

In the Patriots calendar, Hernandez is holding the ball in his hands and wearing a dark blue jersey, silver pants and high socks. It's hard to tell from the Target which month features Hernandez. It has the NFL and NFL Players Association logos on the back.

Hernandez started 29 games for the Gators between 2007-2009, catching 111 passes for 1,382 yards and 12 touchdowns, according to the team's website. He later went on to the Patriots and caught 175 passes for nearly 2,000 yards and 18 touchdowns from 2010-2012.

Hernandez was arrested June 26, 2013, in the slaying of Odin Lloyd, whose body was found in an industrial park about a half-mile from Hernandez's mansion in North Attleborough, Mass. Hernandez goes on trial Oct. 6 for murder.

Hernandez, 24, also has been indicted on two counts of first-degree murder in the drive-by shooting of two other men, Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado, and faces trial next year. He has pleaded not guilty to all of the charges and is in jail in Massachusetts.

The candy men

South Korea finished last in World Cup group H with one draw and two losses.

It was a disappointing -- but not entirely unexpected -- way to go out, and apparently one fan was angry enough to throw taffy at the players upon their return home.

Apparently, the phrase "go eat a taffy" is an insult in Korea, roughly equivalent to "get lost." So that's what the fan was trying to express by throwing actual taffies at the players while they were lined up for photographers in the airport.

On the bright side: Free candy is free candy.

From RJ Currie of sportsdeke.com: "In case you missed it, four women from Holland won the Lingerie World Cup. Lingerie soccer is similar to regular soccer, except every round involves knockouts."
