Fayetteville Nets Volunteer Award

FAYETTEVILLE — Fayetteville was recognized Thursday as an Arkansas Volunteer Community of the Year for the fifth straight year.

The award, sponsored by the governor’s office, Arkansas Municipal League and Arkansas Department of Human Services, recognizes outstanding volunteerism in 12 communities throughout the state.

According to a city news release, 38,000 people volunteered about 657,000 hours in 2013. They served on city boards and committees, participated in stream cleanups, served meals at community kitchens, walked dogs at the Animal Shelter and participated in fundraisers for the Public Library.

Other communities receiving recognition were Bentonville, Blytheville, Clarendon, Clarkridge, Fort Smith, Heber Springs, Murfreesboro, Norfolk, Redfield, Van Buren and Vilonia.
