Fayetteville School Board Interviews First Candidate for Superintendent

— State Education Commissioner Tom Kimbrell will be interviewed today for the superintendent's job in the Fayetteville School District.

The School Board will interview Kimbrell in a special meeting, starting at 5:15 p.m.

Board President Tim Hudson said Kimbrell contacted him Jan. 20 to inquire about the position. The board decided at its regular meeting three days later to interview Kimbrell as soon as possible, even though the job hasn’t been officially advertised, Hudson said.

Kimbrell was appointed chief executive of the Arkansas Department of Education by Gov. Mike Beebe in 2009. He was executive director of the Arkansas Association of Educational Administrators at the time of his appointment. He has served as a superintendent, director of fiscal services, assistant principal, teacher and coach during his 30-year career as an Arkansas educator.

He has been a key voice in the state’s implementation of the Common Core State Standards. He represents Arkansas on the governing board of the Partnership for Assessment of College and Career Readiness which is developing the assessment aligned to Common Core.

Superintendent Vicki Thomas has resigned, effective June 30, to return to Texas to attend to family and business matters.
