Suspect in Springdale killing booked into Benton County Jail

A murder suspect will make a court appearance Friday morning after being brought from Virginia in connection with the death of Edward Abel.

John Armando Guerra, 55, of Duson La., was booked at 12:05 a.m. Wednesday into the Benton County Jail. He is charged with capital murder and aggravated robbery.

Guerra was fighting extradition in Norfolk, Va., but a judge denied Guerra's efforts to prevent him from being brought back to Benton County.

Guerra's bond hearing will be at 8:30 a.m. Friday in Circuit Judge Brad Karren's court, David Reading, deputy prosecutor, said.

James Michael Smith, 48, of Springdale and Guerra were arrested Aug. 23 in Virginia. Smith waived extradition and was previously returned to Arkansas. He previously pleaded not guilty to capital murder. He is also charged with , aggravated robbery and aggravated residential burglary, both Class Y felonies.

Abel, 62, was stabbed to death, according to court documents. He was pronounced dead at Northwest Medical Center-Springdale.

Abel lived in the portion of Springdale in Benton County.

He was found unresponsive in his home following a 911 call at 11:15 p.m. Aug. 16, according to a news release from Springdale police. Abel called a woman, but the call went to voice mail. When the woman listened to the message, she heard a dog barking and heard Abel say, “Just take my wallet.” The woman then called 911.

Smith is being held without bond in the county jail.
