A former youth minister who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl is serving 118 days in the Benton County Jail.

Tyrone Atwater, 43, of Rogers reported Wednesday morning to Circuit Judge Brad Karren's court and then was taken to the Benton County Jail.

Atwater pleaded guilty under a plea agreement on Nov. 14 to sexual assault in the second degree, a Class B felony.

Atwater was allowed to remain free and given a date to report to serve the jail sentence.

He was arrested Nov. 1, 2011.

According to court documents, Atwater was the youth minister at Open Door Baptist Church in Rogers.

Rogers police received a tip from the Arkansas State Police Crimes Against Children hot line involving allegations concerning Atwater and a teenage girl, according to a probable cause affidavit. The 15-year-old girl denied any involvement with Atwater when first questioned by police. The girl and her mother later returned to the Rogers Police Department, where the girl said the allegations were true, according to court documents.

The girl's mother also found text messages from Atwater on her daughter's cellphone, according to court documents.

Karren accepted the plea agreement and Atwater's guilty plea.

Atwater was placed on 6 years state supervised probation.

He was sentenced to 120 days in the county jail, but was given 2 days of credit for the time he had spent in custody.

He will be required to register as a sex offender.
