Deadline is Feb. 1 for 7 scholarships

Feb. 1 is the deadline to apply for seven University of Arkansas at Little Rock scholarships.

They are the Chancellor’s Academic Distinction, Provost’s Academic Excellence, Dean’s Academic Merit, UALR Academic Achievement, Freshmen Award, Engineering and Information Technology, and Shelby Breedlove Transfer scholarships.

RUSSELLVILLE - Arkansas Tech University’s board of trustees has a new chairman, Tom Kennedy of Little Rock.

Kennedy, who was elected during a conference-call board meeting Friday, will serve in the position this calendar year.

He is a former prosecuting attorney and a former state senator. For the past 14 years, he has worked as vice president of public affairs for Entergy Arkansas.

Kennedy graduated from Arkansas Tech in 1982 and later obtained his law degree from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock law school.

He and his wife, Kristi Mitchell, have two daughters.

Other board officers are Eric Burnett of Fort Smith, vice chairman, and John Ed Chambers III of Danville, secretary.Henderson names academic provost

ARKADELPHIA - Henderson State University has named Stephen R. Adkison as its new provost and vice president for academic affairs, President Glen Jones announced.

Adkison, who is now provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Eastern Oregon University, will join Henderson on July 1. His annual salary will be $165,000,

“His character, passion, experience, and commitment to faculty and student success will serve Henderson well. I am confident we will achieve even higher levels of success as we meet the needs of our students, community, and state through our academic program offerings,” Jones said in a news release.

The provost is responsible for the overall supervision of all academic programs, academic promotion and tenure decisions, academic strategic planning, and development of university policies and strategic goals.

Maralyn Sommer, interim provost and vice president for academic affairs at Henderson, led the nationwide search.

Adkison earned both his doctorate in English/rhetoric and composition and his master’s degree in English/ writing from the University of Nevada-Reno. He received his bachelor’s degree in English/ teaching from Montana State University.

Adkison previously worked at Idaho State University and University of Nevada-Reno.
