Club’s lunch includes biblical artifacts, talk

SPRINGDALE - “Treasures of the Bible and Holy Lands,” an exhibit including fragments of the Dead Sea Scrolls and a leaf of the Gutenberg Bible, will be on display Feb. 3 at the Holiday Inn, 1500 S. 48th St., as part of the Springdale Rotary Club’s weekly meeting.

The exhibit will feature items from the special collections of Azusa Pacific University and The Green Collection. Other items on display will include a nearly 4,000-year-old cuneiform tablet, a second-century biblical papyrus, leaves from the Tyndale Bible and other Bibles from the 16th century. Other items to be featured include a leaf from the Aitken Bible, which was the first English Bible printed in the United States; a King James Version New Testament; and more.

The luncheon will include a presentation on the collection by Robert Duke, associate professor of biblical studies at Azusa Pacific University in California. Duke received a Rotary Ambassadorial scholarship to study at Hebrew University in 2000-01, and a fellowship at the W.F. Albright Institute for Archaeological Research in 2005. He serves as the western region director and distinguished scholar of Hebrew texts for the Green Scholars Initiative.

Doors open at 11:30 a.m. The exhibit will be open from 1-2 p.m. The event is open to the public and tickets are available for $35 each. Lunch is included in the price. Compassion class

at St. Paul’s church

FAYETTEVILLE - St. Paul’s Episcopal Church will offer “Introduction to a Compassionate Life” beginning Feb. 17. The class is being offered for the community following the city’s recent designation as a “Compassionate City” as part of an international movement to increase kindness and mercy.

The class will focus on Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life, a book written by Karen Armstrong who started the movement in 2009. The course will include study, discussion and spiritual practices. Participants will meet 6-8 p.m. Mondays at the church, 224 N. East Ave. Cost is $50 and includes materials.
