FOOTBALL Holmes transfers to McNeese State

Former Arkansas running back Nate Holmes has transferred to McNeese State in Lake Charles, La., Cowboys Coach Matt Viator announced Wednesday.

Holmes, a junior, will have immediate eligibility at McNeese State, an NCAA Football Championship Subdivision member of the Southland Conference.

Holmes, from Port Arthur, Texas, played in four games for Arkansas last season and rushed six times for 17 yards. He played in nine games as a freshman and rushed 3 times for 10 yards, returned 2 kickoffs for 38 yards and 11 punts for 70 yards.

BASKETBALL McDaniel UA’s SEC legend

Clint McDaniel, a defensive stopper for Arkansas’ 1994 national championship and 1995 NCAA runner-up teams, has been selected as the Razorbacks’ SEC basketball legend this season. He will be honored at halftime of Arkansas’ SEC Tournament opener in Atlanta.

McDaniel, a guard who came to Arkansas from Tulsa Washington, had 102 steals as a senior during the 1994-1995 season to set an SEC record. He is tied for fifth on Arkansas’ career steals list with 266 and scored 1,007 points in 125 games. He was named to the 1995 Final Four All-Tournament team and was a third-team All-SEC choice as a senior.

Other SEC legends this year are Eddie Phillips, Alabama; Gerald White, Auburn; Greg Stolt, Florida; D.A. Layne, Georgia; Tony Delk, Kentucky; Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf (Chris Jackson), LSU; Ansu Sesay, Ole Miss; Erick Dampier, Mississippi State; John Brown, Missouri; Gary Gregor, South Carolina; Ed Wiener, Tennessee; John Thornton, Texas A&M; and Matt Freije, Vanderbilt.

BOXING Fayetteville’s Henderson eliminated

Kalvin Henderson’s quest for a boxing national championship ended Tuesday night in the second round of the USA Boxing Elite National Championships at HUB Sports Center in Spokane, Wash.

Henderson, of Fayetteville, lost a 3-0 decision to No. 2 seed Daniel Thomas of Concord, Calif., in the middleweight division. Thomas lost in the final at the event last year.
