White wins scholarship

Ashley Carol Lee White of Rogers has received a Chancellor’s Scholarship to study at the University of Arkansas at Monticello.

The scholarship is the university’s most prestigious award. It includes funds for tuition, fees and room and board for as long as eight semesters.

White is the daughter of Harry and Barbara White. Her activities at Rogers Heritage High School, where she is a student, include basketball, National Honor Society, Future Farmers of America, Future Business Leaders of America and Link Crew.

Paris teen earns Eagle Scout

Tom Reed Johns, 14, of Paris is a new Eagle Scout. Johns is a member of Troop41, chartered by the Paris Kiwanis Club.

Johns is the son of Tom and Kay Johns. He has two sisters, Katie and Shelby.

For his Eagle Scout project, Johns built a section of split-rail fence at the Logan County Coal Miners Museum in Paris. He would like to be a staff member at Camp Orr, a Boy Scout camp on the Buffalo River, this summer.

Students receive business honors

The Arkansas Economic Acceleration Foundation announced the winners of the Youth Entrepreneur Showcase youth business plan contest Jan. 17 in Little Rock. Two local teams were among the winners in the business plan and marketing categories.

Tiger Treats, a project by Prairie Grove Middle School students Rebekah Bostian, Matthew Howard, Lexis Madewell and Mary Storlie, took third-place honors in the Best Business Plan competition. The project was led by adviser Dustin Seaton.

Paw-Tastic Treats, a project by Holt Middle School students Kimberly Anderson and Brianna Bailey, won third place in the Best Marketing contest. Adviser Liz Bland oversaw the project.

Duerr honored as principal

Daisy Dyer Duerr, principal at St. Paul High School in the Huntsville School District, has been selected as one of three 2014 “digital principals” by the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

Duerr was chosen for her success using technology to improve instruction, communication and student engagement, according to a news release. Winners will be honored next month at the group’s Ignite ‘14 conference, set for Feb. 6-8 in Dallas.

Candidates were asked to submit a video, essay and portfolio highlighting their use of technology.

Museum cited for preservation

The Fort Smith Regional Art Museum recently received a 2013 Excellence in Preservation through Rehabilitation Award from the Historic Preservation Alliance. The award recognizes projects that retain historic attributes without attempting to restore a structure to its earlier appearance.

Architects Polk Stanley Wilcox and contractors Goodwin & Goodwin Inc. were responsible for the restoration. The award was presented Jan. 10 at the Clinton Presidential Center in Little Rock.

Howard’s artwork featured on web

A piece of art called “Tracks and Shadows” by Judy Howard has been featured in the International Association of Pastel Societies 23rd Juried Exhibition web show, available online at bit.ly/198Co3N.

Howard studied at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith in 1967-1968, when it was Westark College. She graduated from Arkansas Tech University in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in art education.

Howard taught drawing and painting classes at UA Fort Smith for 13 years and then worked for the university for eight more years as a graphic artist. She joined the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture staff as a graphic designer and project manager for publications in 1998.

Howard will also have 16 to 20 pastel paintings in an upcoming show set for March 23 through April 25 at the Bentonville Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Laughton receives excellence award

Jim Laughton, a communication and art faculty member at NorthWest Arkansas Community College, is the recipient of the John and Suanne Roueche Excellence Award from the League for Innovation in the Community College.

Laughton is a composition coordinator for the Bentonville college’s English department. Award winners will be honored March 2-5 at the League’s 2014 conference in Anaheim, Calif.

Morrow chosen for D.C. visit

Rachel Morrow of Cave Springs has been chosen as an alternate for the U.S.

Senate Youth Program. Delegates Abhilasha Gokulan of Little Rock and Adam Williams of Jonesboro will be in Washington, D.C., March 8-15 along with 102 other delegates to meet with U.S. senators, congressmen, congressional staffers, President Barack Obama and other U.S. dignitaries.

Delegates receive a $5,000 college scholarship and an all-expense pad trip to Washington. Morrow is a student at Bentonville High School.

Lauren Williams of Wynne is the other alternate.
