Authorities: Man tried to have area resident killed

A Kansas City, Kan. man is being held in the Benton County Jail in connection with attempting to hire someone to kill a Northwest Arkansas resident.

Leo Mays, 49, was booked at 2:22 a.m. Thursday into the Benton County Jail. He was arrested in connection with conspiracy to commit capital murder.

According to a press release from the Benton County Sheriff's Office, the narcotics division received information that Mays had threatened the life of a Northwest Arkansas resident. The press release did not reveal the identity of the threatened person.

According to the press release, Mays was in the area Tuesday for a scheduled hearing concerning a previous drug-related arrest.

The press release states that a controlled call was completed where the threats were confirmed and a meeting was arranged with Mays. According to the release, Mays arrived at the location and explained how he wanted the resident murdered and how much he would pay for the job.

An undercover detective was present during the conversation and remained with Mays as he attempted to contact the resident, the press release states.

Narcotic's deputies with the assistance of Bentonville police officers arrested Mays.

Mays' arraignment is scheduled for 8 a.m. March 3 in Circuit Judge Robin Green's court.

Mays was being held Thursday in the Benton County Jail with no bond set.
