PUBLIC VIEWPOINT Hobson’s Scientific Evidence Missing

Art Hobson gives us a fascinating account (Geological Time Scale, Jan. 12) of when and how everything began, our solar system, the formation of the earth, the beginning of life, etc. Included, of course, is the grand assumption that macroevolution has occurred, the changing from one species to another involving new body plans and new complex organs. Hobson does not suggest there is any problem at all with that position, that it is, as at least one local pastor assures us, “settled science.” And this settled science is very sure that “in a clear evolutionary line to modern homo sapiens” we have evolved from the apes “that came down from the trees.”

At least twice he refers to the “Cambrian explosion.” But he doesn’t mention that’s when all the basic animal groups suddenly appear without any evidence in the fossil record of evolutionary ancestors. In fact, the fossil record is no help at all in verifying what we call Darwinian evolution. Darwin himself was aware of this but he was confident that in time with more and more fossil discoveries his faith in his theory would be vindicated. More than a century and a half has passed with no such result. Glaringly absent from the fossil record are the numberless transitional forms necessary to show the alleged gradual change of one species to another.

This, of course, doesn’t deter Professor Hobson, who, I fear, will cling to his views, which exclude his Maker. Let all who follow the professor’s counsel take note of the second Psalm: “He who sits in the Heavens shall laugh.”
