100 YEARS AGO Jan. 19, 1914

MALVERN - A man in Malvern, last week, who was peddling county rights on a patent for catching hogs and cattle, showed what he claimed was a report of the state assay office that a sample of sand he has sent in ran $200 to the ton in gold. He said that the sand around Malvern was full of gold, and asserted that he had obtained a spoonful from three pounds of sand. He said he was working his way to Foreman, near which he had valuable mining claims.

Each of the four public high schools in the Little Rock School District has for some time had a restricted area on the campus in which students may smoke. None of the principals intend, at this time, to do away with any of these areas. The Democrat asked the specific question following the U.S. Surgeon General’s report on health hazards in smoking. But the principals admit they have selected areas for smoking which are as “inaccessible and as unattractive as possible in the hope it will discourage the practice.” School authorities are relying on educational programs encouraged by the PTA groups to further discourage the practice of smoking among teenagers.

The wife of a North Little Rock municipal judge wrecked her 1985 190-E Mercedes and crashed into two other vehicles, but was not ticketed by city police, records show. The accident report shows Mary F. Cole, wife of Judge Joel C. Cole, failed to maintain control of her car Jan. 11 near the intersection of A Street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard. Cole hit two cars on a gas station lot. The police report, signed by officers Larry Epperson and Larry Rakoski, show streets were wet at the time of the 9:40 p.m. accident. Both Epperson and Rakoski said Wednesday that since Cole was the only passenger in the car, there “was no need for a ticket.”

10 YEARS AGO Jan. 19, 2004 An uninvited man walked into a North Little Rock home Friday afternoon and used the bathroom without asking, police said. An 11-year-old boy living at 4204 ½ Rogers St. called police at 3:15 p.m. and said a man just ran inside his house, went into a bathroom and slammed the door. The boy, who was home alone, went outside to wait for police. Soon his mother arrived. Police said they searched the house for the man but didn’t find him.
