Hamlet carries Devils in OT

West Memphis junior Alexis Hamlet scored a game-high 34 points, including 10 in overtime, to lead the Lady Devils to a 65-59 victory Friday night at Little Rock Central.

The Lady Devils (10-5, 3-0 7A/6A-East Conference) bolted to a 30-17 halftime lead and increased the margin to 37-21 midway through the third quarter.

Little Rock Central (13-3, 1-2) then went on a 21-0 run to give the Lady Tigers a 42-37 lead with 4:18 left in the fourth quarter.

West Memphis senior LaCarie Jordan, who scored seven points, hit a three-pointer from the baseline with 17 seconds left to give the visitors a 50-48 lead. Central’s Kiara Williams then made two free throws with 11.3 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

In overtime, Central’s Jasmine Cashere gave the Lady Tigers a 54-53 lead with a layup, but Hamlet, who made 19 of 23 free-throw attempts for the game, then hit 4 of 5 from the line. Her three-point play and two free throws in the final 23 seconds sealed the victory for the Lady Devils.

West Memphis also got a strong performance from senior point guard Keona Stinson, who scored 21 points.

Central was led by Williams with 12 points while Taylor Lewis and Brittany Rufus each scored 11.
