Beat-Up Springdale High Team Continues To Push On

Springdale High has had to adjust to life without two of its top wrestlers recently.

The Bulldogs are without Joey Adams (shoulder) and Stevie Ponce (leg), their two state medalists last season.

“It’s about average on the injuries, but my better kids are getting hurt,” Springdale coach Jamie Stallings said.

Adams and Ponce’s absence has created a void in the lineup for Springdale (7-13), which lost to Greenwood but earned a tiebreaker win over Van Buren in a double dual at Springdale Har-Ber on Tuesday night.

But several Bulldogs have maintained strong performances in their weight classes.

Senior Benny Schaefer (16-6) has continued to impress in the 152-pound class, including finishing third at the Maumelle Hornet Swarm over the weekend.

“Benny is our best wrestler right now,” Stallings said.

Senior heavyweight David Garcia also finished third at Maumelle tournament, going 4-1 for the weekend.

“This was his first year to crack the varsity lineup,” Stallings said. “I had him fi nishing between three and six. He wrestled pretty well all weekend. Wrestled tough. I was pleased.”

Adams and Ponce are doubtful for the Bentonville Tiger Classic this weekend, but Stallings hopes to have the duo back to the mix by the Feb. 14-15 state tournament.

ROGERS HIGH

Mounties Continue To Improve

ROGERS — Rogers High wrestling coach Ken Simmons is seeing continued improvement from the Mounties and he hopes to get a better gauge Saturday at the Bentonville Tigers Classic.

“It will give us an idea what is going on with some things,” Simmons said. “I’ve got couple of kids I’m thinking about dropping in weight class at the state tournament. We can drop them here to see if it is a good fit for us.”

The Mounties lost to Bentonville 43-36 Tuesday, which was an improvement from a 58-18 setback earlier this season.

“We wrestled Bentonville really tough,” Simmons said. “We lost an overtime match, it was close. It was better than getting whipped, like we did last time. We made a run at them.”

Tim Blicke will take a 20-0 record at 160 into Saturday’s tournament after posting a win Tuesday

“Blickle looked really good against Bentonville,” Simmons said. “He was banged up last weekend, and didn’t go to the Butler tournament.”

Simmons also said Heath Henman wrestled well in a 17-4 win over Bentonville’s Curtis Brumfield at 138 while Gabe Cox continues to improve at 145. Gio Soto has also returned to the mat at 195 after competing at 220 last season.

ROGERS HERITAGE

War Eagles Wrestle Illness

The Rogers Heritage wrestling team was not at full strength over the weekend, but coach Doug Freeman was still pleased with his team’s six-place performance at the 24-team Hornet Swarm in Maumelle.

“We had four guys with the flu,” Freeman said. “I didn’t know Ramsey Gonzalez was as sick as he was.”

Junior Caleb Royal advanced to the semifinals, but defaulted out of his semifinal match at 126 because of illness.

The War Eagles still got second-place finishes from sophomore Shae Chafin at 145 and junior Jordan Vazquez at 182. In addition, Colton Stewart finished third at 160.

Chafin lost to Bentonville’s Jeff Bizzle, who is undefeated this season, in the fi nals.

“Shae wrestled great and Vazquez did well, too,” Freeman said. “I think he’s like 20-9, but Bizzle is the only one he’s lost to in Arkansas. He wrestled Bizzle tough. He was down like 5-1 when he got pinned.”

Chafin won his first two matches decisively by a combined score of 28-2 and earned a pinfall victory in the semifi nals.

Gonzalez was back for Heritage’s dual against Bentonville on Tuesday, but Royal was not. Heritage will compete in the Bentonville Tiger Classic on Saturday.

BENTONVILLE

Tigers Tune Up With Double Dual

Bentonville made some fi nal preparations for its tournament this weekend, and coach Bill Desler saw mixed results out of Tuesday’s home double dual against Rogers High and Rogers Heritage.

“Some of the guys that won, we expected them to win,” Desler said. “A few of them that lost, we didn’t expect them to lose.

“We still have a long way to go. We still don’t have our lineup completely set as far as where we want our kids, and won’t have it during our tournament. Maybe in a couple of weeks we will.”

Ryan Flynn continues to be impressive in the 132-pound class after a victory Tuesday. Desler said he expects the junior to be on the podium in the state tournament and could be a state champion despite a significant climb in weight classes.

Senior Ryan Grimes moved up to 182 and won in the double dual, but suffered an injury in the process and his status for this weekend’s tournament is unknown. Desler, meanwhile, hopes senior Curtis Brumfield will rise to the occasion with some good showings in the upcoming meets.

FAYETTEVILLE

Young Bulldogs Step Up

FAYETTEVILLE — The winter weather that has hit Northwest Arkansas through the past month hasn’t been kind to many area wrestling teams hoping to participate in scheduled meets in December and January. Fayetteville is clearly no exception.

The Bulldogs, who were already behind after being forced to cancel trips to a couple of meets last month, missed out on another competition when the Cyclone Invitational in Russellville was called off last week due to poor weather conditions.

“We’ve had a lot of stuff called off ,” Fayetteville coach Steve Adair said. “All this bad weather has hurt us.”

The Bulldogs did return to action Tuesday, facing both Rogers High and Rogers Heritage at Bentonville High School. Adair credited junior Jaxson Nolen, as he continues to excel as Fayetteville’s top performer on the mat. Nolen won both matches in the 152-pound weight class Tuesday and has just three losses this season.

Fayetteville lost seven starters from last year’s team, but Adair said other young wrestlers are adjusting to their new roles.

“Evan Johnson, at 145, is an up and coming freshman for us,” Adair said. “Logan Dingler, at 106, is a much improved junior this season. I’m also really proud of Jay Branch. He’s a senior that’s just a very strong wrestler.”

Fayetteville is back in action at the Bentonville Tiger Classic on Saturday.
