University’s White To Speak At Bentonville Event

— Calvin White, Jr., director of the African and African American Studies program at the University of Arkansas and an associate professor of history, will be the featured speaker at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. presentation at NorthWest Arkansas Community College on Jan. 23.

The presentation “Was It All A Dream?: Martin Luther King Jr.’s Vision Today,” will be at noon in room 108 of the Becky Paneitz Student Center, according to a news release.

An expert in the history of African American religion after Emancipation, White’s recent book, “The Rise to Respectability: Race, Religion, and the Church of God in Christ” received praise from The Journal of American History and the academic community, according to the release.

White’s teaching career began at the community college level, and he continues to enjoy teaching while maintaining his administrative responsibilities and an active research agenda. White is the recipient of several national fellowships, including a Gilder-Lehrman Fellowship at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem, N.Y.
