Great nation to live in

This is a great country I live in. I received a whopping big Social Security raise, all of $14 a month.

My drug card went up. My supplement went up. I’ll be depositing $6 less this year than last year. But you can’t keep an old lady down. I’ve got this all figured out.

I can cut down on showers to two each week. That will save on water, soap, laundry and electricity. I can cut out two meals a week. That will save on food and electricity. Look at the weight I’ll lose. So, I’ll be healthier.

Isn’t America great?

We must be gullible

All the fuss over the Affordable Care Act, so why do we have it? I believe it belongs solely to the Democrats and President Barack Obama. Not one Republican voted for its passage; I hope we can all agree on that. Everyone realized health care was out of control, but there were definitely different opinions on how to handle it. So why are we having our decisions made for us?

It is apparent that our Democrats in Congress decided that “we the people” are stupid: We aren’t smart enough to buy a plan that fits our needs, and being stupid, we are vulnerable and many were buying inferior “junk policies.” Many plans sold to the elderly didn’t even have maternity provisions! And most of our healthy young people weren’t buying health insurance, of course because they are stupid. How so very fortunate we are to have Democrats to make our decisions for us.

Selling it to the electorate was not hard. We will all save $2,500 a year on our insurance; being stupid, we all naturally believe that. And no need for alarm if you have insurance, nothing will change except your premiums will plummet. Of course people believed it all, being that we all are gullible (does that sound better than stupid?).

Well, after all, we aren’t smart enough to buy the right light bulbs and people in New York don’t have enough sense to buy 16-ounce sodas instead of the Big Gulp.

I once heard that the definition of stupidity is do the same thing over and over and expect different results. We continue to elect the same kind of career politicians over and over, including a “community organizer” to the highest office in the land. Maybe they have a point.

No harm from truth

Re DNA testing for Belynda Goff and the Innocence Project: I have no ax to grind in the case in question, having never known the people involved, but my wife knew Belynda as a fellow employee at Tyson before the events in question.

However, as an individual who has strong convictions that justice must be served to maintain a respect for “the law,” I believe this case needs to be reviewed to the fullest forensic extent possible. Justice delayed is justice denied and must be diligently sought to correct a possible evil worse than the act of murder in question.

What possible harm can come from knowing the truth? “Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free,” to quote a biblical reference. R. NILES RAINS Green Forest

More of that claptrap

Melissa Harris-Perry has apologized for saying how she really feels. She apparently got a little carried away and assumed that with the election and re-election of a black president, the gates to muck and mire and smear had been opened wide for her viewpoint to finally be accepted as gospel truth.

I’m sure bottles of cheap beer, wine and perhaps malt liquor are being cracked open in celebration of someone of color being able to speak truth to power on MSNBC. The dirty little secret (I apologize for the cliché) is that this kind of claptrap has been going on for years on the major TV channels and cable news.

Will someone please explain why seemingly informed flacks who may be well-known in Chicago, D.C., and New York City and who, I concede, are able to walk and chew gum at the same time, just happen to appear out of the woodwork as Democratic strategists? If you want to know what a real Democratic strategist looks like, I refer you without fear of contradiction to that snake out of Louisiana.

The words “Democratic” and“strategist” conjure up for me such phony job descriptions as “document retrieval clerks” and “sanitation engineers.” Democratic obfuscators would better describe these sycophants. Are they the legitimate heirs of the great radio and television personalities of the not-so-distant past? Do they replace the great scholars of our leading educational institutions? I think not.

One would would think that the media (welcome to the club, Fox News) would someday act as if the average American possessed at least a modicum of plain old horse sense. We are watching and listening to you. It’s not just the NRA anymore.

Another way left out

John Brummett’s recent column, “Killing Obamacare,” caught my eye. It is on a very rare occasion that I read one of his columns. He is just too liberal and illogical for me.

Well, after reading the first sentence of his column, I immediately knew he had left something out. The third way that Obamacare could die is for the Democrats to wake up some morning and discover that Barack Obama has not only lied to America, but to all of the Democrats as well.

I have noticed that the silence is deafening among most Democrats. The exceptions to the rule seem to be Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi. These two seem to have diarrhea of the mouth when it comes to Obamacare, along with John Brummett.

What’s law of the land

Great letter from Ed Hudnall! I wish there were more folks with his train of thought.

I think people who believe gays have chosen their lifestyle should be asked when they chose to be straight.

I believe religion should never be a part of government in any way, shape or form. The Constitution is the law of the land, not the Bible.
