Fayetteville Homeless Vigil Set For Monday

Staff Report

FAYETTEVILLE -- The Fayetteville High School Student Council hopes the third time is a charm.

That would mean the annual Homeless Vigil, scheduled Monday, will be a success. The students hope to raise $20,000 to assist the Families in Transition program that provides assistance to homeless students and their families.

The vigil was postponed twice in December because of weather.

Students have gathered large cardboard boxes to sleep in Monday night. The boxes will be arranged around a 55-gallon fire drum on the pavement adjacent to the vocational agriculture classrooms on Bulldog Boulevard. The area is at the northwest corner of the campus on the site of the former Bulldog Gymnasium.

The event is sponsored by the Student Council. Members of the council are the ones sleeping outside.

The forecast for Monday calls for sunny skies with a high of 53 degrees and an overnight low Tuesday morning of 30 degrees, according to The Weather Channel.

The first cancellation was caused by temperatures near zero and the second because of snow.

Residents are encouraged to stop by and leave a monetary donation or contribute nonperishable food items.

Donations also will be accepted by PayPal through the high school Parent Teachers Organization. Donors may pledge by emailing the Student Council sponsor Vance Arnold, [email protected], and the donor will receive an invoice.
