ON CHRISTIANITY

DEAR REV. GRAHAM: Are we living in the last days? I can’t help but wonder about this when I look at all the bad things that are happening in the world.

DEAR D.F.: Although Jesus warned us not to make precise predictions about His return to earth and the end of the present age, He also told us not to ignore the signs that God would give us, pointing to those events. And we certainly see many of them already taking place.

I think, for example, of Christ’s statement that the end of the present age would not happen until the Gospel had been preached to the whole world (see Mark 13:10). For centuries, vast sections of the world knew nothing about Christ and His love for them, but today they do because the Bible has been translated into their languages. In addition, the Gospel is being preached through radio and television, crossing borders that were once closed.

You’re right that we live in a world of conflict and danger - not just through open warfare, but also through economic, political and social upheaval. These, too, are signs of Christ’s approaching return. The Bible reminds us that “our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed” (Romans 13:11).

The real question, however, is how should we live, in light of Christ’s return? The answer is the same now as it was when Christ first walked on earth: We should be men and women who love God, and seek to live for Jesus Christ every day of our lives. Is this true of you? Don’t live in fear but live in trust, knowing your life and your future are in God’s hands. Jesus said, “You are the light of the world …. Let your light shine before others” (Matthew 5:14,16).
