PUBLIC VIEWPOINT Open Government Is Crucial

The Freedom of Information Act is discussed frequently in the print news. More often it is the newspaper failing to get information subject to disclosure as mandated by the act. For we the citizens to have transparency from our government and expect media to give both sides of an issue, we must have a strong FOIA to be governed by.

The individual citizen has a right to expect the FOIAto apply to them also, for it is likely they will need to use this act during their lifetimes.

No doubt there are many in the four-county area of Northwest Arkansas subject to disclosure who strictly abide by the act. Kudos to these fi ne servants.

Maybe sometimes we wonder what kind of people we patronize, especially when we are not spending money with them.

May I share with you some examples of thosewho are dedicated to a cause?

The present Washington County circuit clerk, who spent much more time than could be expected.

The present Washington County clerk, who was so very kind during several visits, and the guardian of records in the Washington County archives.

The elected oft cials in three counties adjoining Washington County were very helpful and clearly wanted to serve. Many withthe Arkansas State Police deserve respect and thanks for there professional response.

Although not covered by the law, Channel 5 News also recently spent 45 minutes trying to fi nd some very old news for me and I appreciate their eff orts.

Thank all of you for your service and I wish you the best new year.
