Scott Seeks Another Term

BENTONVILLE — John R. Scott has announced he will seek re-election to the bench.

Scott, who has served as a Benton County circuit judge since Oct. 1, 2001, presides over Division 4. He hears civil, domestic relations and probate cases. Scott was appointed to the bench in 2001.

“I was fortunate to practice law in Benton County and to be of service to my clients,” Scott said. “I have now been fortunate enough to make decisions for the citizens of Benton County that help them in their lives. I believe my experience and legal research help me make fair and firm decisions. I strive to make certain that all litigants understand the reasoning for my decisions.”

The nonpartisan election is May 20.

Sen. John Boozman, R-Ark., selected Scott as a 2010 Angel in Adoption for his advocacy of adoption, Scott said. Scott has presided over 625 adoptions since becoming a circuit judge in 2001, Scott said.

“The adoptions in my court are some of the most rewarding and satisfying things about my job,” Scott said.

Bill McClard of Rogers is one of Scott’s supporters. McClard described Scott as a hard worker.

“John is a true worker bee whether in his courtroom or his garden,” McClard said. “He works hard.”

“I’ve been around him a great deal. I know him to be a very ethical and conscientious man who in many cases agonizes and gives great thought to his decisions. He seems to always do the right thing at the right time.”

Scott graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1973 with a bachelor of arts degree in history. He received his law degree in 1977. Scott practiced law in Rogers from 1977 until he was appointed to the bench.

Scott is a member of the Arkansas Bar Association, and a member and past president of the Benton County Bar Association. He is also a member and past president of the Rogers Kiwanis Club. He also has served as a member and past chairman of the Rogers Airport Commission. He is active in the William B. Putman Inn of Court, and served as president of the group in 2006.

Scott has served on the board of directors of the Arkansas Judicial Council, and serves on the Arkansas Supreme Court Child Support Committee. He has also served as president of the Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce.

Scott also has been administrative judge for the county’s circuit judges. Scott was selected as the Outstanding Trial Judge in 2013 by the Arkansas Trial Lawyers Association.

Dick Trammel said he known Scott since Scott moved to the Rogers area.

“I am honored to support Judge Scott for another term,” Trammel said. “He’s the type of judge that I would like to have if I had any problems, and he the type of judge our community should have to help solve problems.”

Scott is married to State Rep. Sue Scott, R-Rogers. They have four children and eight grandchildren.

He and his wife are active in St. Theodore’s Episcopal Church.
