Hot Shooting Goldman Lifts Lincoln To State

LINCOLN -- Shandon Goldman was in a groove Thursday night.

Goldman did not score a two-point field goal, but the 6-foot-8 Lincoln junior didn't have to go inside against Subiaco Academy in a first round game at the 4A-North Regional Tournament.

Lincoln (20-4): Goldman 26, Escareno 20, McConnell 4, Hulse 3, Cummings 3, Brewer 3, Barnum 2, Espinoza 2.

Subiaco (16-11): Krueger 10, Vines 7, Reed 7, Hollis 6, Johnson 5, Hurst 3, Strobel 3, Bergen 2, Post 2.

Goldman scored 26 points on eight 3-pointers, and senior Ossy Escareno added 20 points and three more 3-pointers as No. 3 seed Lincoln defeated Subiaco Academy 63-45.

The win puts Lincoln (20-4) into the Class 4A State Tournament for the second straight year.

Goldman hit two 3-pointers the first 2 minutes, 47 seconds of the game as the Wolves jumped out to an 11-2 lead. His back-to-back 3-pointers in the fourth period put the game out of reach after the Trojans had cut the lead to 45-35 early in the final period.

"I was feeling it tonight," Goldman said. "That first 3-pointer set the tone, and they were not guarding me tight."

Goldman had three 3-pointers in the first half as the Wolves took a 31-17 lead at the break. His fourth 3-pointer early in the third quarter upped the Wolves' advantage to 37-23.

"After the fourth one, they started guarding me a little closer," Goldman said. "After that, my teammates did a good job of getting me the basketball. Ossy even said after the fifth one, 'You are on fire, I'm going to find you.' And he did. We left the state tournament early last year. This year we are going to give extra effort to go farther."

Lincoln coach Tim Rich said the Wolves' fast start set the tone for the game. Justin Brewer started the game with a quick field goal and Goldman and Escareno then hit two 3-pointers each for a 14-2 lead just under four minutes into the game.

"We have come out and had some slow starts the previous two games," Rich said. "We talked about coming out and taking care of business, giving 100 percent. I was really happy that we came out and played aggressive. Goldman came out and had a great game."

Rich said there is a little bit of pressure off heading into a regional semifinal matchup with Prairie Grove tonight.

"This was a big game, and it's a good feeling to know that you will be playing next week," Rich said.

Pottsville 48, Farmington 33

Pottsville used an 11-0 run that stretched from the third period to early in fourth period to pull away from the No. 2 seed Cardinals.

Farmington (15-12) cut the Pottsville lead to 29-24 on a 3-pointer by Jeremy Mueller, but Pottsville responded with a big run to pull away. Pottsville senior Michael Perry scored nine of his game-high 27 points during the run. Travis Cole added 12 points for Pottsville.

Mueller led Farmington with eight points.

Pottsville (19-8) will play Maumelle in the regional semifinals at 8:30 tonight.

Girls

Farmington 57, Dover 23

Farmington (23-5) got off to a fast start and the Lady Cardinals never looked back in easily defeating Dover. Farmington earned a berth to the Class 4A State Tournament with the win and will face Berryville in the regional semifinals at 7 tonight.

Haley Maxwell led nine Farmington players in the scoring column with 19 points. Trish O'Connell and Tahlon Hopkins each finished with nine points for the Lady Cardinals. Farmington led 44-11 at halftime. The win also completed a four-game sweep for the 4A-1 Conference in the girls' bracket.

Laken Beavers led Dover with six points.

Ozark 56, Mena 37

Kylie Ladd scored 14 points and Olivia Melton added 13 as Ozark defeated Mena to earn a trip to the Class 4A State Tournament next week in Lonoke.

Ozark (22-5) will face Prairie Grove today at 4 p.m. in the regional semifinals.

Ozark took a 25-16 lead at halftime when Katie Shaffer hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer. The Lady Hillbillies then pulled away in the second half.

Madison Sherrer led Mena (17-11) with 15 points while Jacquelyn Johnson added 11 points.
