Bentonville School Makeup Day Plan Official

BENTONVILLE -- The School District's plan to use a Saturday and two days of spring break to make up class time lost to winter weather became official this week following staff members' approval.

The calendar change, which the School Board approved last week, was voted on by 1,399 staff members, according to the district. The vote was 1,077 (77 percent) to 322 (23 percent) in favor. Voting ended Wednesday.

Schools on the district's traditional calendar will be open March 15. They also will be open March 24 and 25, the Monday and Tuesday of spring break week.

The district has canceled 11 days because of weather. It has made up two days. Other days will be made up at the end of the year.

School districts are required to have 178 school days with 360 minutes of instruction each but can apply to the state for a waiver of any days missed beyond 10. Bentonville has applied for a waiver of its 11th snow day. The Arkansas Board of Education, which must approve the waiver, holds its next meeting March 20.

The last day of the year for schools on the traditional calendar will be June 6 if the board approves the waiver.
