2:18 p.m. update: Police have identified the man was shot as Everett Payne, 33.

Police had not apprehended a suspect in a shooting by Monday evening.

Sgt. Craig Stout said a 33-year-old man at 4378 Chaparral Lane, near Wedington Drive and Interstate 540, suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder Monday afternoon after another man broke into the residence.

The victim was taken to Washington Regional Medical Center for the wound, which wasn't life-threatening.

"There was a struggle inside the residence, and that's when the victim was shot," Stout said. "He wasn't able to give us much (information) because we wanted to get his wound treated."

Investigators were waiting for a warrant for the victim's house and were talking to him at the hospital, Stout said Monday evening. Police didn't release the victim's name.

"Most of these home invasions, at least in the last three or four years, we have never seen one that was truly a random event," he added.
