“Go to Church Sunday” yesterday - the first united special effort ever made by Little Rock pastors to attract crowds to the churches - met with splendid results, estimates last night fixing the increase at greater than one-third over the usual attendance. Estimates varied as to the numbers present at all the churches in Little Rock, Argenta and Pulaski Heights, some expressing the belief that 22,000 persons went to the forenoon services.

Remember Granny with her corncob pipe? Well, she’s making a comeback, only she ain’t Granny anymore and the pipe’s not corncob, son. It’s rhinestone studded briar, man, and the ladies firing up these bowls don’t look like anybody’s Granny by scores of years. Little Rock stores report that pipes for ladies are selling like hot cakes. They are not only giving the ladies a reason to stop smoking cigarettes, but they’re also providing something in the way of a new novelty item for their wardrobe. The pipes are new in Little Rock. Store salesladies say they have had them in stock from a few days to a week.

A 10-rule code of conduct for library patrons was approved Wednesday by the Central Arkansas Library System Board. The code was developed in response to complaints about homeless people and others loitering inside and near the library. The rules prevent patrons from sleeping, eating, drinking and smoking on library property, and require all patrons to wear shoes. The rules also prohibit destruction of library property, soliciting, bathing or changing clothes in public restrooms, noisy conversations, littering or entering the garden pond.

10 YEARS AGO Feb. 23, 2004 WASHINGTON - Gov. Mike Huckabee said Sunday that consumer preferences, not President Bush, are responsible for an estimated 3 million jobs lost since Bush took office in 2001. Huckabee’s comment came as job losses and other issues related to the presidential election - including news that Ralph Nader, the well-known consumer advocate, would run again - cast a shadow over the winter meeting of the National Governors Association. While in Washington, Huckabee appeared on CNN’s Late Edition with the governors of Michigan, Colorado and Pennsylvania. “We’ve lost jobs. Sure we have. Everybody has,” Huckabee said. “But you know everyone wants to blame the president. You know who is really at fault? The consumers.”
