SPRINGDALE -- Springdale's Chris Owens and Fayetteville were deadlocked in a tie at 16 at halftime Friday night.

Fayetteville didn't have an answer for the Springdale High junior guard early in the game. And it cost the Bulldogs.

Fayetteville (12-13, 5-7): Willis 17, Adams 8, Renner 8, O’Grady 9, Conley 5, Young 2, Matthews 2.

Springdale (18-5, 10-2): Owens 19, J. Wymer 15, Gause 10, Cook 7, Evans 6, Eckwood 3.

Owens scored 16 of his game-high 19 in the first half to lead Springdale to a 60-51 win over rival Fayetteville in Bulldog Gym.

Owens made his first four shots and finished 8-of-15 from the floor to lead Springdale (18-5, 10-2 7A/6A-West) in scoring for the fifth time in seven games.

"I don't know what other adjectives to use that I haven't already used," Springdale coach Brad Stamps said. "He is a scorer. (When) he gets it going, it just seems like every time he puts a shot up, it's going in."

Owens' fast start helped Springdale end the first half strong and take a 27-16 lead into intermission. Fayetteville (12-13, 5-7) pulled within six in the final minute as Springdale shot 12-of-24 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, but couldn't get any closer.

"Our kids compete," Fayetteville coach Kyle Adams said. "We had a shot to cut it to a one-possession game. If that goes, you never know what happens. But I'm proud of our kids. I thought we competed our tails off."

Springdale jumped out to the double-digit lead thanks to holding talented Fayetteville sophomore Payton Willis to two first-half points. Willis, who had 18 in the teams' first meeting, scored 15 in the second half to finish with a team-high 17, but the Purple'Dogs couldn't sustain a rally.

Springdale also got big games from Josiah Wymer, TreShawn Gause and Brendan Cook. Wymer had 15 points, Gause added 10 off the bench and Cook had seven points, several key free throws and a few assists.

"A lot of different guys did things tonight," Stamps said. "TreShawn played well on both ends. Brendan Cook made some really nice passes. ... Most people that talk about Springdale talk about our guard play. But we've got a big (Wymer) that I feel like is as good as anybodies."
