Elsewhere in entertainment and the arts: Jazz trio at ASU

The Ed Soph Trio - Soph on percussion, John Adams on bass and Stefan Karlsson on piano - will join the Arkansas State University Percussion Ensemble and Jazz Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. today in Riceland Hall, ASU’s Fowler Center, 201 Olympic Drive, Jonesboro.

The program will include arrangements of “Blue Rondo a la Turk” by Dave Brubeck and “Cherokee” by Ray Noble; “Yesterdays” by Jerome Kern; “Stella by Starlight” by Victor Young; Karlsson’s “Illusions,” “Trikings” and “Smilin’ Eyes”; “Con Alma” by Dizzy Gillespie; “I Mean You” and “Ask Me Now” by Thelonious Monk; and “Stablemates” by Benny Golson.

Civil rights program

MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History is partnering with the Arkansas National Guard for a Black History Month celebration on the topic of “Civil Rightsin Arkansas,” 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday at the museum in MacArthur Park, 503 E. Ninth St., Little Rock. Leon Johnson, circuit judge for the 1st Division of Pulaski County and former president of the Harold Flowers Law Society, will speak. ‘Concert of Spirituals’

Baritone Ira Spaulding and organist and pianist Sharon Gorman will perform a “Concert of Spirituals” at 7 p.m. Friday in Raymond Munger Memorial Chapel, University of the Ozarks, Clarksville. The concert is part of the university’s Walton Arts & Ideas Series.

Spaulding’s program will include Roland Hayes’ cycle of spirituals, The Life of Christ; the University Chamber Singers will also join him for choral arrangements of “Wade in the Water,” “Lazarus,” “I Wanna Be Ready” and “Precious Lord, Take My Hand.”

Bridesmaids audition

The Lantern Theatre and Conway Community Arts will hold auditions for Five Women Wearing the Same Dress by Alan Ball at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 25 at the theater, 1021 Van Ronkle St., Conway. The play deals with five Knoxville, Tenn., bridesmaids who, while hiding out in a bedroom during the wedding reception at the bride’s house, discuss everything from religion and drugs to cheating husbands.

The cast calls for five women and one man, all age 18-40. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. Production dates are April 17-19 and April 25-27. Call (501) 450-6247 or email [email protected].

Royal Film Fest

Benton’s Royal Players will host the first Royal Film Festival (formerly the Reel Women Film Festival) March 29 at the Royal Theatre, 111 S. Market St., Benton, showcasing Arkansas filmmakers, plus a slate of films from the University of Mississippi at Oxford, including a short documentary on Benton restaurant Ed & Kay’s.
