Duever finishes off Houston Baptist

Courtney Duever’s jumper with four seconds remaining lifted Central Arkansas to a 57-55 victory over Houston Baptist on Saturday afternoon at Sharp Gymnasium in Houston.

UCA trailed 32-23 at halftime but held Houston Baptist to 21.74 percent shooting in the second half and outscored the Huskies 34-23.

The Sugar Bears (16-8) remained in first place in the Southland Conference, improving to 10-3. UCA rebounded from a 45-42 loss Thursday night at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Duever led UCA with 16 points and nine rebounds. Maggie Proffitt had 12 points, including two three-pointers. Brittany Agee added 10 points.

UCA trailed 32-23 at halftime, but used a 16-7 run in the first 8:30 of the second half to tie the game at 39-39.

Houston Baptist regained the lead, 41-39, before Duever’s three-point play gave UCA a 42-41 advantage with 10:34 left.

Monet Neal’s back-to-back baskets put the Huskies on top 51-48 with 3:31 remaining. Proffitt’s two free throws gave UCA a 52-51 lead with 2:09 left, but Neal put Houston Baptist ahead again, 53-52, with two free throws at the 1:58 mark.

Proffitt hit a three-pointer with 59 seconds left for a 55-53 lead. With 13 seconds left, Heidi Sihvola tied the game at 55-55.

After Duever’s go-ahead jumper, Houston Baptist had one last chance to tie the game or win it. But Neal’s jumper with one second left did not fall and Brianna Mullins grabbed the rebound to seal the victory for UCA.

UCA shot 50 percent (14 of 28) from the field in the second half and finished at 43.4percent (23 of 53). The Sugar Bears outrebounded the Huskies 31-30.

Neal led Houston Baptist (11-14, 7-7) with 11 points.

SWAC WOMEN SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY 77, ARK.-PINE BLUFF 68

Kendra Coleman scored 21 points as Southern University of Baton Rouge (14-6) improved to 11-1 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference with a victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff (3-19, 2-10) at the F.G. Clark Activity Center in Baton Rouge.

Brittany Washington had 20 points for the Lady Jaguars. Southern shot 41.3 percent (26 of 63) from the field.

Carlisha Walker and Cassidy Wright had 12 points each to lead the Lady Lions.
