SPRINGDALE — Twin County Street residents were evacuated from their homes Friday during a standoff between police and a man who refused to surrender.

The incident followed a call to the Springdale Fire Department on Friday morning about a possible drug overdose at 2685 Ponchartrain St., a couple blocks away from Twin County Street, according to a news release from police.

Joseph Fuller, 26, was taken to Northwest Medical Center-Springdale where he was pronounced dead, oft cials said.

Family members, including Joseph Fuller’s brother Johnathon Fuller, 24, went to the hospital, according to the news release.

He made threats to people he thought were involved in Joseph Fuller’s death, said Lt. Derek Hudson, police spokesman.

“He said he was going to kill those individuals,” Hudson said.

Fuller even asked family members to help him kill the people he believed were responsible, according to the news release.

Family members refused to help him, telling him to let the police handle the situation, Hudson said. Fuller then threatened his family members.

Fuller said he was going to 3080 Twin County St. to get weapons and kill the people he thought were responsible for the death, Hudson said.

Family members told police Johnathon Fuller had several fi rearms, including rifles, according to the news release.

Oftcers had trouble contacting Fuller at first, but reached him by phone. He didn’t cooperate and refused to leave the house.

The standoff lasted under two hours.

The department’s Special Weapons And Tactics Team along with negotiators went to the house on Twin County Street where the street was blocked by police cars. Residents of the 3000 block of Twin County Street were evacuated during the standoff .

Fuller eventually surrendered, was arrested and taken to the hospital for a mental health evaluation, according to the release. Charges are pending.

A woman who identifi ed herself as Joseph Fuller’s wife demanded reporters leave the area, and attempts to speak with neighbors were unsuccessful.

No one was injured during the standoff , Hudson said.

Detectives are investigating Joseph Fuller’s death, according to the release.
