FAYETTEVILLE — Chances are the Transportation Division will be coming to a street or sidewalk near you this year.

Members of the City Council’s Transportation Committee recommended repaving or resealing 8.2 miles of streets and building 6.1 miles of sidewalks.

The city paved 10.9 miles of streets and laid 1.8 miles of sidewalk last year, according to a year-end management report.

“If the weather will lighten up, we’ll be on it hot and heavy,” Terry Gulley, Transportation Services director, said.

Several streets atop Mount Sequoyah are due for a new layer of asphalt, including a 600-foot stretch of Rodgers Drive where a portion of the road surface slid away during heavy rain in April 2011.

Dickson Street east of College Avenue and Sang Avenue, Maple Street, Halsell Road and Sang Avenue west of Razorback Stadium will be repaved in conjunction with new sidewalk construction.

This marks the second year the Transportation Division will hire a company to treat streets in decent condition with a sealant called microseal.

“It seals the surface of the street to prevent further weathering of the underlying pavement,” Gulley said. Streets can be resurfaced every six to nine years with microseal, rather than the typical 15-year cycle for traditional repaving. A microseal application costs about 60 percent less than traditional milling and overlay, Gulley said. The idea is to prolong the life of road surfaces before they need serious repair.

Several streets in the Pine Creek subdivision, north of Wedington Drive and west of Rupple Road, and in the Park Place subdivision, near Mission Boulevard and Cambridge Road, are scheduled for microseal treatment.

City offcials plan to triple sidewalk construction in 2014.

Sidewalks are going in on the east side of Armstrong Avenue from a bus stop at 15th Street to the city’s industrial park. City off cials also plan to add sidewalks on the east side of School Avenue, between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and 15th Street, for residents who want to bypass a tunnel being built as part of a halfmile extension to the Frisco Trail. The trail will run from King Boulevard to Walker Park.

Sidewalks on the west side of Salem Road, from Earnhardt Drive to Bentgrass Road, are intended to provide a safe route to school for students at Holcomb Elementary School.

The roughly $1.5 million in sidewalk projects will be paid for using more than $1 million from a half-cent sales tax Arkansas voters approved in 2012.

The city’s 2014 capital improvement budget for street paving and sealing is $1.7 million.

This year’s projects were compiled based on requests from residents and City Council members.

“You always want everything, but … I’m OK with this list,” Justin Tennant, Ward 3 alderman, said.

The City Council is scheduled to consider the street paving and sidewalk plan next month.
