Stanley told multiple elderly residents Jan. 2 in Fayetteville their roofs needed repair, according to an arrest report.

Police said Stanley pretended to fix an 87-year-old woman’s roof and charged her $400.

The woman displayed early signs of Alzheimer’s, according to the report.

Stanley told a second elderly women a squirrel ran under her turbine, caused damage and offered to repair her roof for $150, according to the report. The woman declined his offer.

Stanley returned the next day. The woman said her neighbor checked the roof and it didn’t need to be repaired, according to the report. Stanley spoke to the neighbor and gave him a business card, “Superior Surface Solutions Protective and Reflective Coatings for all Surfaces: Owner Brian Stanley.” The card had Stanley’s phone number. The neighbor told Stanley he would take care of his neighbor’s roof, according to the report.

A third elderly resident allowed Stanley into his attic, according to the report. Stanley told the tenant he scared a squirrel out of the attic through the same hole it entered. He pretended to repair the roof and charged the tenant $1,000, according to the report.

Police obtained surveillance images from the Bank of Fayetteville showing McCoy using his driver’s license to cash the woman’s check.

McCoy told police he rode with Stanley to a house in Fayetteville to pick up a check, according to the report.

Stanley didn’t have a driver’s license and offered McCoy $100 to cash the check, according to the report.

McCoy said he didn’t know of the roof scam.

Stanley and McCoy were in the Washington County Detention Center on $175,000 bonds Tuesday.
