BASEBALL ASU, UALR tabbed seventh, ninth in Sun Belt

Arkansas State and UALR were picked to finish seventh and ninth, respectively, in the Sun Belt Conference’s preseason poll.

The poll and conference teams were picked by the league’s head coaches.

ASU first baseman Zach George was named to the preseason All-Sun Belt team.

UAPB picked to finish third in SWAC West

Arkansas-Pine Bluff was picked to finish third in the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s West Division by the conference’s head coaches and sports information directors.

UAPB earned 57 points, including five first-place votes. Southern University of Baton Rouge (West) and Alabama State (East) were picked to win the league’s two divisions.

Golden Lions second baseman Isias Alcantar was a first-team selection while reliever Jim Ploeger earned a second-team nod.

UAM, SAU players honored by GAC

Arkansas-Monticello’s D’Marco Poindexter and Southern Arkansas’ Timothy Buchanan were named Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week by the Great American Conference.

Poindexter, a center fielder for the Muleriders, hit a game-winning home run in the ninth inning against Henderson State. A day earlier, he had a two-run double against Central Missouri. In two games against Minnesota-Mankato, he went 5 for 9 with 3 RBI.

Buchanan improved to 2-0 with seven shutout innings against Texas A&M-Kingsville. In that start, he struck out 12 batters and allowed 4 hits while walking 2.

UAM climbs into national rankings

Arkansas-Monticello climbed to No. 15 and No. 21 in the College Baseball Lineup and D2Baseballnews.com’s national rankings, respectively.

The Boll Wevills are 5-1 with three victories coming against nationally-ranked opponents. UAM defeated No. 15 St. Mary’s 16-5, No. 19 Central Missouri 4-2 and No. 1-ranked Minnesota-Mankato 8-5.

BASKETBALL Hendrix’ Primm gets SAA honor

Hendrix College’s Colton Primm was named Southern Athletic Association player of the week on Monday.

Primm averaged 19.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.5 blocks and 1.5 assists per game in victories for the Warriors. He also shot 63.2 percent from the field and 75.0 percent from the line.

Arkansas announces signees

Arkansas men’s coach Chris Bucknam has announced the signing of 13 students athletes for the 2014-2015 school year.

The class includes Alex Springer, a a javelin thrower from Shawnee, Kan.; Austin Dalquist, a distance runner from Keller, Texas; Kenzo Cotton, a sprinter from La Vista, Neb.; Ethan Moehn, a distance runner from Monroe, Wis.; Gabe Moore, a participant in the pentathlon and heptathlon from Freeport, Fla.; Andrew Henn, a javelin thrower from Paola, Kan., Rubin Owens, a tripler jumper from Le Roy, N.Y.; Noah Gilfilan, a pole vaulter from Corsicana, Texas; Derek Zimmerman, a long jumper and triple jumper from Freeman, Neb.; Juan Green, a sprinter from South Plains, Texas; Zachary Riley, a sprinter from Benton; Alex George, a British distance runner and Anthony Blakely, a sprinter from Hensley.

GOLF ASU women in eighth place

The Arkansas State women are in eighth place with a 627 after two rounds at the Le Triomphe Collegiate Invitational in Broussard, La.

The Red Wolves shot a 316 in the second round after a 311 in the first round. Louisiana-Monroe leads with a 599 while Houston Baptist is second at 604. Central Arkansas is 10th with a 630 (313-317). Megan Garland is tied for 11th with a 152 (73-79). Alison Knowles of Louisiana-Monroe leads with a 141 (71-70).

Maci Arrington of Arkansas State is tied for 21st with a 154 (75-79). UCA’s Sarah Brown is tied for 24th with a 155 after shooting a 77-78.
