Rogers man sentenced for beating of neighbor

A Rogers man was sentenced to 15 years in prison Tuesday for beating a neighbor.

Stephen James Kaufmann, 30, pleaded guilty to battery in the first degree. He also was charged with attempted rape, but that charge was dismissed under a plea agreement attorney Shane Wilkinson reached with Carrie Dobbs, deputy prosecutor.

Kaufmann was arrested April 15, 2012.

Officers responded to duplex on April 15. They found the woman nude and covered in blood. The woman had a head wound that exposed her skull., according to court documents,

Kaufmann told police he blacked out, but came to and was hitting the woman with his fists, according to the affidavit. Kaufmann denied attempting to rape the woman, according to court documents.

Circuit Judge Robin Green accepted the plea agreement and and Kaufmann’s guilty plea. The victim was not in court for the plea.

Kaufmann was sentenced to 15 years in the Arkansas Department of Correction. He must abide by a suspended-sentence agreement for five years after his release from prison.
