Game Goes Extra Twice

LADY WILDCATS HOLD ON

Saturday, February 8, 2014

SILOAM SPRINGS - Springdale Har-Ber girls basketball coach Sandy Wright stopped short of saying she wanted a third overtime Friday night.

After battling Siloam Springs to a tie after four quarters and one overtime, the Lady Wildcats jumped on the Lady Panthers in the second overtime and pulled out a 79-77 win at Panther Activity Center.

“Well I think (the double overtime period) benefited us in the long run,” Wright said. “I thought we had a little more depth than they did. The last time we played at their place our bench outscored them 13-0, and I don’t know what it was tonight, but it played a factor.”

With the win, the Lady Wildcats completed the season sweep of the Lady Panthers. Har-Ber defeated Siloam Springs 55-54 on Jan. 10 at Wildcat Arena.

Har-Ber’s bench outscored Siloam Springs 30-2 on Friday, and that came into play as fouls piled up in the second half and overtimes. The Lady Wildcats got 23 points off the bench from freshman Jacie Higgins - 19 of which were scored after halftime.

Paige Redmond added 19 points, while Bailey Schalk scored 13 points for Har-Ber (17-4, 7-1).

Baily Cameron poured in 30 points to lead Siloam Springs (14-6, 4-4), while Morgan Miller had 17, Bailee Owens 16 and Mayse Pippin 11.

Har-Ber had a chance to win at the end of both regulation and the fi rst overtime, but Redmond’s shots were unable to fall both times.

In the second overtime, Higgins scored Har-Ber’s first seven points as the Lady Wildcats took a 72-66 lead.

Higgins had a three-point play to open the frame, a driving basket and score in transition. After a Schalk basket, the Lady Wildcats led 74-68.

“We couldn’t get the crucial defensive stop wehad been getting the last four games,” said Siloam Springs coach Tim Rippy. “They kept getting the lead, and we kept having to respond out of necessity.”

Siloam Springs made a run of its own. Owens converted a three-point play and Morgan Miller hit a 3-pointer with 29 seconds left to pull the Lady Panthers within 76-75.

Samantha Weber had a free throw rim in, and she banked home the next one to give Har-Ber a 78-75 lead.

Miller missed a layup on the other end and Schalk grabbed the rebound and was fouled. She hit 1 of 2 for a 79-75 lead.

Siloam Springs junior Taylor Gay was fouled on a 3-pointer with 3.3 seconds left. Gay hit the first two free throws and appeared to intentionally miss the third in an effort for Siloam Springs to try and get the rebound.

Har-Ber got it instead and cleared the ball out to run the remaining time off .
