FAYETTEVILLE — A man faces felony charges after police said he scammed an elderly woman out of money.

Police arrested Stuart Grayson McCoy, 41, of 901 W. Bel Air Drive on Thursday in connection with felony abuse of an endangered or impaired person and misdemeanor failure to appear.

According to an arrest report, a man approached an 87-year-old woman Jan. 2 and told her her roof needed repair.

Police said the man pretended to fix the woman’s roof and charged her $400.

The woman displayed early signs of Alzheimer’s, according to the report.

The woman’s daughter filed a theft report with police Jan. 13, according to the report.

Police said obtained surveillance images from the Bank of Fayetteville showing McCoy using his driver’s license to cash the woman’s check.

McCoy told police he rode with a person he met in drug court to an address in Fayetteville to pick up a check, according to the report.

He said the co-worker didn’t have a driver’s license and offered McCoy $100 to cash the check.

McCoy said he had no knowledge of the roof scam or the woman’s condition.

He was arrested and taken to the Washington County Detention Center, where he was being held Friday on $175,000 bond.
